Tammet Supplies Metal Mesh for Europe’s Largest Electric Boiler Plant

Tammet is supplying aluminum facade mesh for what will be Europe’s largest electric boiler plant in Hanasaari, Helsinki. The metal mesh gives the industrial building’s facades a three-dimensional appearance.

Based in Tammisaari, Finland, Tammet is supplying the facade mesh for Helen’s 200-megawatt electric boiler plant in Hanasaari, part of the modernization of Helsinki’s district heating production. The project also emphasizes architecture and the choice of materials that fit the urban landscape.

The electric boilers will replace combustion-based heat production and use electricity when it is economically advantageous. Once completed, the plant will be able to meet nearly one-tenth of Helsinki’s heating demand during the coldest winter weather.

Design Creates an Interplay of Light and Shadow

The uncoated aluminum expanded metal mesh supplied by Tammet has been bent into triangular profiles that add depth to the facade and create an interplay of light and shadow. Its appearance changes with the lighting and viewing angle, while the metallic surface of the aluminum complements the building’s industrial character.

“The transformation of energy production is also visible in the urban landscape. The Hanasaari project shows how metal mesh can give an industrial building a distinctive appearance. Our solutions bring together the building’s functional and architectural needs,” says Jan Silén, CEO of Tammet.

Oulun Julkisivu Oy is responsible for installing the expanded metal mesh. Juha Lehtonen of One Architects serves as the project’s principal designer and architect.
