Parking Gains Its Distinctive Look with Expanded Metal Mesh
Jätkäsaari in Helsinki is an area where modern urban development meets the proximity of the sea and the pulse of constant movement. Completed in 2020, the P-Atlas parking facility is one of the district’s most striking buildings and at the same time, an example of how technical solutions can also become an architectural feature.
The goal for the façade was to combine durability, openness, and a modern appearance. The chosen solution was Tammet’s aluminum expanded metal mesh, which adds rhythm and lightness to the building while meeting the practical requirements of a parking structure.
Cables for climbing plants have been installed in front of the mesh facade, making the entire building environmentally friendly and sustainable.
The expanded metal mesh used in P-Atlas is type 200/20/2 and finished with a powder coating in the elegant RAL9007 shade. The aluminum material makes the structure lightweight yet durable — qualities that are especially valued in demanding urban environments.
The building’s façade changes with the daylight: the mesh surface creates shifting shadows and transparency that transform the appearance of the structure throughout the day. The result is both highly functional and visually compelling.
P-Atlas demonstrates how expanded metal mesh can be much more than a technical solution. It can become part of a building’s identity and the surrounding cityscape — modern, durable, and timeless design at its best.
